DENVER, Colo. — With Chatfield Reservoir closed to boaters due to flooding, Cherry Creek Reservoir is expected to be extra busy Father’s Day Weekend.

A month’s worth of rain in May made Chatfield too difficult, Colorado Parks & Wildlife said. Vehicles aren’t able to back their boats down into the reservoir from the park’s ramps.

That’s also an issue on the west side of Cherry Creek State Park. That ramp is also closed to flooding.

Fortunately, the east side of Cherry Creek is still open.

Cherry Creek Reservoir is seeing its highest water levels in nearly two decades. The reservoir has expanded an additional 15 feet into the parks’ banks.

“We’re looking to make sure anyone that comes to visit, that they’re going to have a safe experience and that we’re making sure everyone knows what’s going on at the park. If there’s any changes or closures we’ll let people know ASAP,” said Jennifer Churchill with Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

Thousands are expected to visit Cherry Creek State Park on Saturday and Sunday. If you plan to bring your boat, expect a 3-4 hour wait.

While Chatfield is closed to boats, you can still canoe and kayak there.

Boyd Lake in Loveland is also open to boaters, same goes for Jackson Lake State Park out east.
