CARBONDALE, Colo. — Two girls were hospitalized and released after a Carbondale woman said she mixed a box of rat poison into smoothies for her and her daughters to drink, the Aspen Times reports.

Maria Alvarado-Gomez, 32, was arrested and told police through an interpreter she “would rather the children be dead than alive in Mexico,” where she said the girls’ father wanted to take them.

Alvarado-Gomez was charged with two counts of attempted murder against the 8- and 11-year-old girls, who returned to their father after leaving the hospital.

The poisoning happened Monday; Alvarado-Gomez was arrested Wednesday.

The woman told police “she did not want to suffer anymore and she did not want her children to suffer anymore,” the newspaper reported.

The father, Martin Luciano- Gonzalez, 46, told police Alvarado- Gomez was getting counseling, but police reports say nothing about him indicating he wanted to leave with the girls.
