Boulder sheriff’s deputy shoots, kills possible kidnap suspect near Eldorado Springs

A possible kidnapping in a Honda ended when a deputy shot and killed a suspect in Boulder County. It looks like a gun is on the roof of the Honda.

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office was investigating an officer-involved shooting that killed a possible kidnap suspect near Eldorado Springs Wednesday afternoon.

A sheriff’s office spokeswoman said when deputies arrived on the scene at Doudy Trail Trailhead, they saw a rear seat passenger in a white Honda sedan holding a gun to the back of the head of the man sitting in the front seat.

“One deputy fired one round from a department issued rifle, striking the suspect. The driver of the Honda and the front seat passenger were not injured,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Heidi Prentup said.

The deputy was later identified as Jeffrey Brunkow.

This started shortly before noon when Westminster police got a call to do a welfare check on members of a family in the 10100 block of Benton Street.

Police arrived at the residence and found out the suspect had come to the house to transfer the title of a vehicle. Two males from the home left willingly with the suspect. But officers later determined the two were being held against their will in the car.

Westminster police said the suspect made several threats to family members about killing everyone in the car and that he had a weapon with him.

Westminster police believed the car was in the Boulder area, and notified Boulder authorities at about 1 p.m.  Soon after that, Boulder County 911 dispatchers received several calls from a cell phone in the area of the Doudy Draw Trailhead off of Eldorado Springs Drive.

Prentup said the officer involved shooting will be investigated by the Boulder County Multi Agency Shoot team in conjunction with the Coroner’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office.
