ARVADA, Colo. — The body recovered late Monday afternoon from the rubble of a building destroyed in a fire in Arvada over the weekend has been identified as missing addiction counselor John Rutter.
The fire broke out Saturday just before 10 a.m. at West 64th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard.
Creative Treatment Options was holding a class inside the building when the fire started. Rutter was inside at the time and had not been seen or heard from since.
On Tuesday, the body was identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
“While this is never the outcome we hope for, we are grateful to the coroner for helping us to bring some closure to the family of John Rutter,” Arvada police Det. Myles Heivilin said in a news release.
The official autopsy has not been released.
“The structure is unstable. This building suffered intense damage and the interior has collapsed. The roof collapsed,” said Deanna Harrington, deputy fire marshall for the Arvada Fire Protection District.
Harrington said because the structure is so unstable, investigators were not able to safely go inside the building and conduct a search for Rutter.
“There is an imminent collapse. So its not structurally safe for us to enter this building at this time,” Harrington said Sunday.
Trained search and rescue dogs were also sent in to aid in the recovery.
Creative Treatment Options said it is waiting for official word from the fire department before making any public statements.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
