BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — The body of the fisherman believed to have fallen into Boulder Creek was found near the trail head on Boulder Canyon Road by search party on Monday around 1:30 p.m.
Crews retrieved the body from the water just before 3:30 on Monday, but the Boulder County Coroner has not yet identified the man.
Officials said the deceased man was 42-years-old.
Crews told FOX31 Denver they used a boat to recover the body. The recovery was risky because waters are high and running fast.
“You can always fish from the bank, but just stay out of the water,” said Heidi Prentup, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Commander. “When it’s running this high and this fast, it’s very dangerous.”
Witnesses called 911 Sunday to report the man being swept downstream, reports said.
The search resumed Monday afternoon with search and rescue dogs after being suspended because the water was rushing too fast, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said.
Search teams began searching along the creek late Sunday afternoon when reports came in from a hiker who said he saw a body with waders and fishing gear floating down the creek about 5 p.m.
The man said he and some friends were in the Dome Rock section of Boulder Canyon when they saw the man floating down the creek.
Downstream, emergency responders kept an eye out hoping to have an effective recovery operation, but on Sunday night that didn’t happened.
“All of a sudden you can see a limp body flow right by you,” Brian Hughes said. “My first reaction was to get to a shallow part to see what we could do. We got somebody in the water, but they just froze. They couldn’t do anything.”
Crews were expected to resume searching Monday morning, but Boulder Creek was running at 560 to 580 cubic feet per second.
“This is too fast for divers to be in the water with limited information as to where the person may be located,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
But at noon, the sheriff’s office said three dogs joined in the resumption of the search and kayakers are expected to go into the creek later Monday afternoon and float from the base of Boulder Canyon to about 83rd Street.
The sheriff’s office said the unidentified fisherman is from Denver and his vehicle was found near Sugarloaf Road and Highway 119.
