DENVER — A body was recovered from the South Platte River under a bridge late Sunday morning.
The body was reported in the water under the bridge at Huron Street and West Exposition Avenue near Habitat Park about 11:15 a.m.
Family members said the body was that of Joe Goodwin, the Marine who fell into the South Platte River last week. Denver Fire recovered the body by 2 p.m.
The search for Goodwin’s body was called off indefinitely on June 23 after police were unable to locate him after the Army Corps of Engineers lowered the water level to help aid in the search.
The family released a statement Sunday.
We are heartbroken with the news of Joey’s tragic loss. We would like to thank all first responders including Sheridan Police, Denver Fire, Denver Police, Arapahoe Search and Rescue and all volunteers who helped with the search effort.
Thank you to all those who prayed. We ask for your continued prayer as we deal with this sudden and tragic loss.
