DENVER — Autopsy results released Friday show Denver police shot 17-year-old Jessie Hernandez three times during their confrontation with her in an alley last month.

Police say she was driving a stolen car and attempted to run them down when they shot and killed her.

The autopsy report says one bullet hit Hernandez, causing two separate wounds. It went into her chest and then into her leg. She also had two other bullet wounds. The report says none of the shots came from close range.

The medical examiner classifies her cause of death as homicide.

Additionally, it says the teen tested positive for marijuana and alcohol at the time of the confrontation.

This report comes as a new plea is being made urging the U.S. Department of Justice to take action in the girl’s death.

A petition with thousands of signatures was brought to the Department in Denver demanding a formal federal investigation of the Denver Police Department.

An attorney representing Jessie Hernandez’ family released a statement Friday evening. “The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner has classified the death of Jessica Hernandez as a homicide. The report shows that Jessie was shot from the driver’s side of the car and not from close range. These facts undermine the Denver Police Department’s claim that Jessie was driving at the officers as they shot her.

It goes on to say, “The Hernandez family again calls for an independent federal investigation of Jessie’s death and the Denver Police Department’s policies that led to it. There is now objective evidence contradicting the Denver Police Department’s claims that Jessie was to blame for her own death.”

DPD says its internal affairs investigation into the shooting continues.
