COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An officer assigned to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs was killed in a helicopter crash near Kabul, Afghanistan.
An Academy spokeswoman said the crash happened Sunday. It was not related to any hostile activity.
Maj. Phyllis Pelky, 45, aide-de-camp to the superintendent and assigned to Air Force Academy headquarters staff was one of five killed in the accident. Five others were injured.
“We are grieving a deeply felt loss today,” Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson said. “Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Major Pelky and all those affected by this tragedy.”
Pelky, of Rio Rancho, N.M., was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
