ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Adams County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Robert Joseph Slater Sheetz is charged with misdemeanor child abuse of his newborn daughter, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
On Sept. 18, Brighton police officers took the 30-year-old deputy into custody after they were called to Children’s Hospital Colorado on a child abuse report involving the infant, ACSO reports.
The sheriff’s office said Sheetz is charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, which is a felony. However, the DA’s office said he is charged with knowing or reckless child abuse resulting in injury, which is a class 1 misdemeanor.
The abuse allegedly occurred at the deputy’s home in Brighton.
According to the DA’s office, the 34-day-old girl had injuries to her face.
“Her mother had taken the baby to the hospital that morning from the family residence in Brighton. A physician concluded that the infant had suffered non-accidental trauma,” the DA’s office said in a statement issued Wednesday.
Sheetz’s next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Nov. 5 in Adams County Court.
