DENVER — More than three dozen neglected dogs were at a Denver animal shelter Tuesday night, getting ready to find new homes.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office in southern Colorado along with the Colorado Humane Society rescued the dogs earlier Tuesday from a home in Penrose.

Authorities said 58-year-old Demaris Chess had the animals and now faces 37 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

“Most of the dogs, which included several puppies, some as young as 5 weeks old, are Australian cattle dog mixes. Most of the dogs were emaciated and dehydrated. A veterinarian at the scene treated several of the animals with fluids and for minor injuries before they were removed from the property,” the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The dogs were at the Dumb Friends League in Denver where they will be adopted to loving families.
