2 Lakewood officers shot while responding to welfare check; Suspect also shot, in custody

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Two Lakewood Police officers were shot while responding to a welfare check Saturday night.

A Lakewood PD spokesman said a woman called police about her despondent husband at their home on S. Kipling Street and Jewell Avenue.

The husband, who has not been identified, threatened violence if officers showed up.

Police spokesman Steve Davis said a male and a female officer arrived at the scene and were almost immediately shot.

Both have non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment, Davis said.

The officers were wearing bullet-proof vests, which likely saved their lives, police said.

The shooter was himself shot by other responding officers. He is receiving treatment and is expected to survive, Davis said.

The suspect’s name has not been released. Davis said he is in his 50s.

Residents in the area said they thought the sound of gunfire was actually just fireworks.

At least two dozen police vehicles from the Lakewood Police and the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office responded to the scene.

Police will likely take the rest of the night to process the crime scene.

FOX31 Denver has a crew on scene and this story will be updated as more information arrives.
