Steve Hogan’s time as mayor of Aurora has been changed forever.  He never imagined his challenges as new mayor would include helping his community recover from a devastating shooting at a local movie theater.

From his desk, Hogan can see the movie theater where 12 people were killed and dozens injured during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.”

“Every day, every day for the rest of the time I’m mayor, I will look out at those theaters,” Hogan said.

Hogan wants to keep the focus on the victims and their families and how the community will recover, not the young suspect armed with semi-automatic rifles.

“I keep thinking of what happened there and those people, but then I stop and I say to myself, ‘I have to do as exactly as those families said to me: this isn’t about that guy. This isn’t about remembering him,” Hogan said.

“It’s about doing something to honor the victims and honor the survivors and to honor the families and to honor everybody else who was in there and make it better. That’s what it’s about, that’s the challenge, that’s what we’ll do,” Hogan said. “We got to remember the people and we’ve got everybody who was here, except that guy.”
