PUEBLO WEST, Colo. — A series of reports regarding “significant care concerns” for residents at the  Pueblo Regional Center are being investigated by Pueblo County Sheriff and Colorado Department of Human Services.

According to a news release from CDHS representative Alicia Caldwell, they learned of allegations regarding the safety of clients at the Pueblo Regional Center and took immediate action to ensure the health and safety of the residents.

Reggie Bicha, the Executive Director of CDHS reported that, through an investigation they have found allegations of physical abuse, verbal abuse and alleged unlawful sexual contact.

“Effective immediately eight staff members, including those in leadership, management and care provider positions, have been placed on administrative leave with pay while we continue our investigation,” Bicha said.

Three additional staff members have been put on paid administrative leave regarding an earlier investigation, the release reported.

Several new staff members and care providers have been appointed to take interim positions to ensure the operations of the Regional Center continue.

“The allegations and concerns were of such a nature that we determined the need to review all of the interactions where the Sheriff’s Office was contacted regarding individuals at PRC,” said Sheriff Kirk M. Taylor. “We consider these individuals to be some of the most vulnerable in our community and we want to ensure they are well cared for and protected.”

The investigation is ongoing.  No further details were immediately available.
