One person dies in retirement community fire, another injured

AURORA, Colo. — Firefighters battled a blaze on the sixth floor of a retirement community late Friday evening, the Aurora Fire Department said.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. when Aurora Fire said a fire broke out at Heather Gardens at 14000 Linvale Place.

One was transported in critical condition and later died at the hospital. The deceased is Jerome “Jerry” Altman.

The second victim, in moderate condition, remains in the hospital.

Aurora Fire had some water supply problems, but those problems didn’t affect the way firefighters fought the fire.

An investigation revealed unattended cooking was the cause.  The fire was quickly taken under control. Firefighters were able to completely knock down the fire by 8:15 p.m.

One dog died in the fire despite attempts to revive it by the Aurora Fire Rescue.
