WATKINS, Colo. —  The Adams County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating an officer-involved shooting near Watkins.

The shooting happened around 7:10 a.m. when deputies were trying to stop a stolen vehicle near a Shell truck stop.

Deputies began pursuing the suspect on a chase near East Colfax Avenue and Peterson Road, when the suspect started firing at deputies. Deputies fired back, striking the suspect, according to ACSO.

“I woke up, got some coffee and heard some pops and I just figured it was someone target practicing,” one neighbor said. “That doesn’t happen, not out here, not out here, so kind of surprised me, an early morning wake-up.”

The sheriff’s office says the suspect was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

The suspect’s name and gender have not yet been released.

The shooting is under investigation.

Colfax was closed in the area for several hours. It reopened about 4:15 p.m.
