DENVER — One person was killed and four others were wounded after a dispute led to a shooting in Lower Downtown early Sunday morning, the Denver Police Department said.

The shooting happened near 15th and Market streets just after 4 a.m., police said.

Police released few details, only saying a dispute between two people led to the shooting.

“There was a conflict between two individuals,” said Lt. Matt Clark. “We’re working to determine the root cause of that, and where it started.”

A man was pronounced dead at the scene an two other men were taken to Denver Health Medical Center.

A third man later walked into Denver Health after being taken there in a private vehicle.

Police said Sunday afternoon that a fifth victim, a woman, was identified related to the shooting. She was taken to a hospital from a separate location late Sunday morning.

All four surviving victims are stable condition and do not have life-threatening injuries, police said.

No arrests have been made, but police said they are seeking two men. It’s possible more than one person opened fire, police said.

“Unfortunately, they were using weapons as part of their resolution for this,” says Chief Paul Pazen. “That’s dangerous anywhere in our community, anywhere in our city.”

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fight. They declined to release other details because of the investigation.

Market Street was closed between 14th and 16th streets and 15th Street was closed at Larimer Street for nearly 10 hours Sunday. Police reopened 15th Street just before 2 p.m.

This intersection has been a hot spot for crime since last summer.

In August, 6 people were stabbed outside a nightclub at 14th and Market.

On Sept. 16, 3 people were shot at 15th and Market.

Two weeks later (Sept. 28), two people were shot at 14th and Market.

Denver police say they are working to improve safety in the area.

“We are re-doubling efforts to improve technology in our city to address this,” said Chief Pazen. “As well as ensure that we have enough resources to keep our community safe.”

Chief Pazen says his department has recovered nearly 300 illegal guns so far this year.

“We want to get illegal guns off the street, and out of the hands of criminals that will choose to do this type of violence in our city.”
