DENVER — A Colorado judge has sentenced a former investigator in the Pueblo District Attorney’s Office to four years of probation for assisting a nationwide bookmaking ring and using the office to facilitate the illegal gambling.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports the sentence was imposed by Judge Shelley Gilman on Charles “Chuck” Widup for the crimes of misuse of official information and attempt to influence a public servant. The sentence also includes 150 hours of community service.

The 69-year-old Widup pleaded guilty on Oct.18 to one count of each of the two crimes in a plea deal with a prosecutor in exchange for other charges being dropped.

Widup had a 30-year career in law enforcement, mostly in Southern Colorado, and was deputy chief investigator in the office, which he joined in 2013.
