DURANGO, Colo. — A 21-year-old Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Colorado man during a marijuana robbery.

Michael Jones of Corsicana, Texas was convicted in August of killing 34-year-old David Gaytan in May 2017 at a residence west of Durango. The Durango Herald reports Jones was sentenced Friday.

Prosecutors said Jones and two other men drove to Colorado to buy marijuana, but robbed the sellers at gunpoint. Court records said Gaytan was shot in the chest when he lunged at Jones.

The defense asked for a 30-year prison sentence rather than life, citing Jones’ tough childhood, including having a father in federal prison. Defense attorney Justin Bogan says Jones plans to appeal.

Prosecutors argued Jones had previous gun-related charges, indicating he is dangerous.
