LARAMIE COUNTY, Wyo. — One person was killed and another is missing after a train crash in southeastern Wyoming on Thursday evening.

About 7:45 p.m., a Union Pacific freight train rear-ended another Union Pacific freight train that was stopped on the tracks about 18 miles west of Cheyenne.

Four men who work for Union Pacific were involved. One was killed and another is missing. The other two were taken to a hospital but have since been released.

The men’s identities have not been released.

Don Hollingshead, a spokesman for the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office, described the crash as “catastrophic,” with train cars “stacked up on each other.”

The sheriff’s office says it could take days for crews to remove the massive pile of debris.

The Union Pacific railroad shut down the line in the area for the ongoing investigation and removal of wreckage. Its biggest concern is losing two of its employees.

“It’s extremely difficult for the union pacific family, spokeswoman Raquel Espinoza said. “First and foremost it is a family, and we recognize that there are true family members that are hurting right now.

“Our prayers are with them, and we are doing everything that we can to support them.”

The two trains were carrying general freight, from lumber and steel to frozen McDonald’s french fries. There were hazardous materials as well but everything was contained.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation said Exit 345 on Interstate 80 is closed.

A number of Laramie County agencies responded to the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board was notified. Personnel with the agency arrived at the scene overnight.
