WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Two people were killed and at least nine people were injured after a fire at a Westminster apartment complex on Sunday morning.

Firefighters rushed to the Westbury Apartments, west of Interstate 25 and south of 120th Avenue, about 2:15 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, the large building home to 69 apartments was engulfed in flames.

Westminster Fire Department Lt. Jeromy Hill said several people jumped from second and third story units in order to evacuate while others were rescued by fire and police personnel.

Hill said that one of the victims who died was found at the scene while the other died at a hospital. Nine other people remain hospitalized but their conditions are unknown.

Firefighters said at the height of the fire, nearly 90 firefighters from five agencies were on scene.

Thirty residents were taken by bus to Silver Hills Middle School that’s being used a shelter.

The American Red Cross is on scene assisting the displaced residents and Westminster Fire reported Sunday evening that all but one resident have been accounted for.

No firefighters were injured. Hill said the cause is under investigation. Names of those who died have not been released.

Any witnesses to the fire who might have left the scene are asked to contact Westminster authorities at 303-658-4360.
