LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A barricaded gunman is dead after forcing several residents to shelter in place for more than 12 hours late Saturday night and into Sunday morning, according to the Lakewood Police Department.

Police said the gunman was inside a unit at the Ashford Belmar Apartments in the 7300 block of West Kentucky Drive.

About 8:30 p.m. Saturday, a call came in about a domestic situation involving a gun, police said. The suspect is a 48-year-old man. The woman got away and was able to call police.

When officers got to the scene, they heard a gunshot, which prompted the SWAT team to be called. Police could not say if the suspect is the one who fired the gun.

The shelter in place was lifted about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police said they talked with the man throughout the night before losing contact on Sunday morning.

After several unsuccessful attempts to recontact him, a Jefferson County sheriff’s bomb squad robot entered the apartment and found the man dead from a self- inflicted injury.

A couple who were walking their dog nearby said they saw a younger man get arrested. Investigators were also taking pictures of something on the sidewalk.

“Then, they all started getting out, like, rifles and shotguns, and they asked us to move back,” Audrey Davis said of the police at the scene.

She said they then heard the gunshot from the parking lot.

“Cops just started freaking diving behind their cars,” Jean Healey said.

The couple said they also saw the SWAT team at the scene.
