MONTE VISTA, Colo. — Thousands of sandhill cranes are spending their spring break in Colorado’s San Luis Valley.

The birds spend a few weeks in Monte Vista every March and October as part of their annual migration.

The best chance to see the birds is near the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge off of Highway 15, just south of Monte Vista.

Monte Vista is about four hours south of Denver.
