WESTMINSTER, Colo. — A 4-year-old boy was struck by a minivan and dragged a short distance while in a crosswalk in front of an elementary school on Wednesday morning, the Westminster Police Department said.

The incident happened about 8 a.m. in front of Skyline Vista Elementary School at West 74th Avenue and Zuni Street.

The boy was crossing the street with an adult and other family members when he was struck by the minivan and dragged a short distance before the driver realized what happened.

Several adults nearby came to help free the boy before medical personnel arrived, using a jack to prop up the minivan.

The boy was taken to Denver Health Medical Center and is expected to survive. The extent of the injuries is not known.

An adult female driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor in the accident.

The driver, who was not identified, was cited for careless driving resulting in injury and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
