AURORA, Colo. — The man who was shot at Cherry Creek State Park on Sunday night has died, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said Monday morning.

The man was identified as 26-year-old Jackson Lee Chavez. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy and found he died of gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen.

The death is being investigated as a homicide.

Chavez reportedly was involved in an altercation and was shot about 7:20 p.m. near the west boat ramp, the sheriff’s office said.

Chavez  was taken to a hospital in unknown condition but later was pronounced dead.

The park reopened Monday morning after being closed overnight for the investigation. The sheriff’s office has not released any suspect information.

Visitors were prevented at one point from leaving the park for more than 30 minutes on Sunday night after the shooting.
