DENVER — Thursday marked the first of four days dedicated to honoring fallen officers with the Denver Police Department. More than 70 officers have been killed in the line of duty in the department’s history.

In the days leading up to the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the Denver Police Law Enforcement Museum will place signs of remembrance for four officers at the locations where each lost their life.

This year, officers Darrell J. Suer, Edward H. Smerdel, Carl Knobbe and Mike Dowd will be recognized.

To date, approximately 16 signs of remembrance have been placed around Denver.

Each dedication ceremony includes a brief synopsis of the how the event occurred. Locations of the remaining remembrance ceremonies can be found at the Denver Police Law Enforcement Museum’s website.
