BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Officials say nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated as the Cold Springs Fire continues to burn near Nederland.
The fire expanded to 606 acres overnight and is zero percent contained as of 8 a.m. Monday. It’s burning in the area of Peak to Peak Highway and Sugarloaf Road.
On Sunday, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrested two campers from Alabama for their alleged role in the start of the fire. The men were arrested at the Nederland High School evacuation site.
The sheriff’s office said 28-year-old Jimmy Suggs and 26-year-old Zackary Kuykendall of Vinemont, Ala., face a felony arson charge because lives were endangered as a result of the fire.

The fire destroyed homes at 171 Bonanza Drive, 37 N. Sky View Drive and 325 Sherwood Drive, the Boulder Office of Emergency Management said.
An additional 30 homes are within the fire perimeter, but officials do not believe any homes are in the immediate path of the fire.
Officials said 250 firefighters and law enforcement are on the ground fighting the fire with trucks along with multiple airplanes.
Evacuations are in place for all residents in the subdivisions of Bonanza Mountain Estates, Cold Springs, Whispering Pines. St. Anton Highlands and Silver Springs, according to the Boulder Office of Emergency Management.
Additional mandatory evacuations were ordered Sunday afternoon for more than 700 contacts for areas around Boulder Canyon west of Magnolia and Sugarloaf roads (south and southeast of Barker Reservoir through Aspen Meadows), Boulder County Office of Emergency Management said.
Evacuated residents can check in at Nederland High School (597 Eldora Road) and the East Boulder Recreation Center (5660 Sioux Drive in Boulder).
Both shelters will be available overnight on Sunday. The American Red Cross said it has volunteers on scene at both locations and will provide cots, blankets, personal hygiene items, food and beverages along with access to information.
Residents with large animals are being asked to take them to the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. Small animals and pets can be brought with residents to the evacuation centers.
Officials said if residents feel threatened but are not in the evacuation area to not wait for an official order.
Around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the Boulder Office of Emergency Management signed a local disaster declaration to enable additional resources. A fire ban has also been put in place in Boulder County, officials said.
