WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Frustrated drivers reached out to the FOX31 Denver Problem Solvers on Wednesday, saying water has been bubbling up from a manhole on eastbound 120th Avenue just before Interstate 25 for more than a year, causing a flooded roadway in the summer and icy conditions in the winter.
“One of the cities needs to step up and take responsibility,” Eva Safar said. “We’re all residents here.”
While two cities have been battling over who’s responsible to fix it, Safar said drivers have been battling dangerous road conditions.
The Problem Solvers found out the manhole is on the border between the city lines of Northglenn and Westminster.
“I called the city of Westminster, who told me it’s the city of Northglenn, who told me it’s the city of Westminster,” Safar said.
Safar said it has been all shrugs and finger pointing. But the water is still flowing and likely has been for more than a year.
“This is every day, all day, all morning, all night,” she said.
“I think they should just get it done,” another driver, Samantha McCreary, said. “I don’t care who does it, just someone.”
The issue is lurking underground. The city of Northglenn said it has tests that prove the water is coming from Westminster. And the city of Westminster said its tests conclude the water does not meet the profile of the water in its distribution system.
“It’s like your parents saying, ‘Oh, clean that up.’ You’re like, ‘I didn’t make the mess.’ Just clean it up,” driver Dale Johnson said. “Don’t leave it and say, ‘Hey, no that’s not my water.”
Meanwhile, drivers said they’re forced to make last-second maneuvers.
“Everybody is trying to either avoid it by going around it, and merging at the last second,” Safar said.
And they hope the problem is solved before next winter.
“It was like a good 3 inches of just ice [last winter],” Johnson said.
Employees at the gas station off eastbound 120th near I-25 said they saw several accidents last winter with ice sending vehicles flying into the pole outside the gas station.
The Problem Solvers called the Northglenn Police Department requesting data regarding the number of crashes but have not heard back.
The city of Westminster told the Problem Solvers it is planning to install some equipment to run further testing to find a possible leak.
On Thursday morning, officials from the city of Westminster was at the manhole working on the issue.
