DENVER — The woman who was shot by a man in a downtown Denver building on Tuesday afternoon died Wednesday morning and the shooter was her estranged husband, the Denver Police Department said.
The 52-year-old woman was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds after being shot inside the Alliance Center at 1536 Wynkoop St. about 2:40 p.m.
The shooter then shot and killed himself. Denver police Cmdr. Ron Saunier said the man was from Buena Vista.
Police said the woman was an executive director at an unidentified nonprofit on the second floor of the building. Her name has not been released.
Police said the 58-year-old suspect went in the front door of the building with a handgun and confronted the woman in her office. After a short chase, the suspect then shot the woman. Police said some witnesses of the 120 witnesses who were interviewed tried to intervene during the shooting.
Police said the woman filed for divorce in April and that the man had been banned from the airport in Buena Vista. He had no criminal history. The couple did not have any children together but there were children from previous marriages.
Police said the man had become increasingly mentally unstable and that there were some rumblings something like the shooting might happen.
“It’s a tragic situation,” said Saunier, adding the woman filed a protective order in 2013.
The Alliance Center was closed Wednesday, but it is scheduled to reopen Thursday.
