MESA COUNTY, Colo. — A teenager arrested in the death of his ex-girlfriend admitted he shot her twice in the head, then took her body across the state because “he (was) upset with her,” according to an arrest affidavit.

Tanner Flores, 18, was arrested Friday after Mesa County sheriff’s deputies found the body of Ashley Doolittle, 18, in Collbran.  Doolittle was reported missing Thursday night when she didn’t return home. Her unoccupied vehicle was found near Long Hagler Reservoir in Larimer County.

Doolittle had recently ended a one-year relationship with Flores and Flores was distraught over the breakup, the affidavit said.

“Tanner was ‘upset’ over the breakup with Ashley,” a friend of Flores told law enforcement, according to the affidavit. “Another friend stated that Tanner was ‘really down’ over the breakup and did not know why they were no longer together.”

Flores’ father told the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office that his .22-caliber revolver was missing from a gun locker in his home.

“Tanner apparently sent a Snapchat message to several friends on (June 8) in the late evening that had a message that was suicidal in nature,” the affidavit said.

Flores told investigators he shot Doolittle near Carter Lake because he was upset with her, the affidavit said. He then drove to his late grandfather’s home in Collbran, cleaned her body and put it back in his truck.

Larimer County deputies contacted a woman who lived near the property, the affidavit said. While talking to deputies, she saw a white truck in the driveway.

“She saw that the male had opened all the doors to the truck and pulled out what looked to be a bundled-up blanket from the back seat of the truck and set it on the ground,” the affidavit said. “(The woman) said she was not totally sure, but she thought she could see an arm sticking out of the bundle.”

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to the home to watch Flores.

“The male was observed near the truck and the residence but no female was observed with him,” the affidavit said. “At one point the male was observed throwing something in the field north of the residence that deputies believed was a rag with potential blood on it. The male was also observed with something black in his hand.”

Flores was arrested about 10:30 a.m. Doolittle’s body was found in the back of the truck.

Flores is being held without bond in the Mesa County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping. He is due back in court on June 24, though he likely will be moved to Larimer County before then.
