JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Law enforcement from all over Colorado are paying their respects to the family of Jaimie Jursevics, the Colorado State trooper who was killed in the line of duty Sunday night.

Tuesday afternoon, Jursevics’ family was escorted from their home in Utah to Denver. They were given a special welcome from law enforcement during their trip.

From a distance, the glow of flashing red and blue lights on an overpass above Interstate 70 in Genesee seemed like a familiar sight for drivers.

“I was coming up the roads, I saw the lights flashing and I thought there must be a terrible accident or something because I’m used to seeing that up in this area,” Genesee resident Don Lafaver said.

As dozens of state troopers and other law enforcement lined up beneath the United States and Colorado State flags, Lafaver knew it was a much more tender moment.

“I thought about the trooper who was killed,” he said.

Sunday night around 8:50 p.m., a suspected drunk driver hit and killed Jursevics. She was out of her vehicle in the southbound lanes of I-25 near Tomah Road assisting with a minor accident.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, she was aware of the suspected drunk driver and was trying to signal him to stop when he hit her.

“We are all grieving. We’re grieving for the family of the trooper. I hope that all of you keep your thoughts with this trooper,” said Colorado State Police Chief Scott Hernandez early Monday morning.

Tuesday, Hernandez and the rest of CSP remained silent to honor and respect Jursevics’ family. An escort led her family to Denver. Along all 300 miles of I-70 in Colorado, troopers and officers stood along bridges to salute them in remembrance.

“It just almost choked me up to see the people out here like this and I noticed a lot of civilians are stopping too to see what’s going on,” Lafaver said.

While the small procession only lasted a few seconds, it was a moment that is sure to stay with Jursevics’ family and law enforcement forever.

The fallen trooper is also a mother to an 8-month-old baby girl. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help her family.
