MANSFIELD, Texas — A couple in Texas preparing to adopt twin boys say they’re heartbroken after learning they may have been duped by a fake pregnancy.
Jason and Byron Miller say they’d already had three adoptions fall through when they heard about Wenona McClellan.

“This woman walked into an adoption attorney’s office and said, ‘Hey, I’m about to have a baby this week. I need someone to take these kids,’” Jason said.

The Millers say they met with Wenona McClellan, saw sonograms of twins, and were even invited to touch her belly in hopes of feeling the babies kick.

“You’re thinking these are going to be your sons. Soon,” Byron said.

The Millers scrambled to prepare a nursery.

“Getting not one crib, but two cribs. Not one car seat, but two car seats,” Byron said.

They liquidated a 401K preparing to pay adoption fees and say an adoption attorney gave McClellan several thousand dollars to cover living expenses.

“We were so excited in that moment that she was actually gonna allow us to have her children and we were going to be new parents that if there were red flags, we didn’t see them,” Byron said.

But, when McClellan postponed her C-section until this week, the pair grew suspicious.

They took a closer look at the sonogram and spotted a copyright that appeared briefly at the beginning.

They traced it to a video posted on the Internet years ago.

“After everything we’d been through, this could not be happening,” Byron said.

McClellan, it turns out, has a criminal history involving theft, bad checks, and drug possession.

She currently has a warrant out for arrest for violating probation.

After missing a doctor’s appointment Monday, she disappeared altogether, taking with her the Millers’ hope of ever having children.

“It’s been so rough – emotionally and financially,” Byron said.

Now the Millers are stuck with a pair of cribs, a fully decorated nursery, an empty bank account and no babies.

The Millers say this latest adoption heartbreak will likely be their last, even though they say friends and family keep trying to encourage them to go through with it.

“I think we’ve done our best,” Byron said.

There’s still no sign of Wenona McClellan.
