PUEBLO, Colo. — A person has died in Pueblo County as a result of West Nile virus, the first such death in the county this year, the Pueblo City-County Health Department said Thursday.

West Nile virus develops in five to 14 days after a bite from an infected mosquito. All forms of the virus can bring serious consequences, including potential for long-term illness, disability and death.

It affects any age group. People with other health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension or who are immune compromised are at greater risk for serious complications.

Symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle weakness, rash, stiff neck and changed mental state.

Someone who is infected with West Nile virus might feel extremely tired and weak for several weeks. There are precautions to can take to avoid getting West Nile virus. Experts always say to follow the “four Ds:”

  1. Drain: Get rid of standing water in tires or similar water-holding containers. Standing water serves as mosquito breeding sites. Change water in bird baths and flower pots at least weekly
  2. Dusk and Dawn: Avoid outdoor activities such as gardening at dusk, dawn and when mosquitoes are most active
  3. DEET: Use inset repellents that contain DEET.
  4. Dress: If outside when mosquitoes are most active, cover your skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes and socks.
