WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Of the 10,000 students in Adams County School District 50, 8,000 receive free food. Each day, teachers pick up baskets full of food for students at Flynn Elementary School.

“We love the choice of fruits and vegetables … but we really love the French toast,” said a collective of kids in Carrie Strand’s class.

“Our kids grab what they want, then head to their desks to do their first assignment,” Strand said. “This gives them the chance to get something in their stomach, to help them focus on the morning ahead.”

Studies have shown kids who have had a good night’s sleep, perhaps a quick shower and then a good breakfast do much better in school than those who come less rested and hungry.

The Hunger Free Colorado program helps school districts get food supplies they need to help them make critical nutritional choices.

Dave Maki with District 50 said, “I love what Michelle Obama is doing, and who benefits? The kids, that’s who.”

Folks are highlighting this program because the measure that pays for school food programs is up for renewal at the end of the month.
