GRAND COUNTY, Colo. — Crews on Monday recovered the body of 31-year-old Christoper Mullinex , who disappeared after diving from a pontoon boat in Lake Granby last week, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities detected what they believed to be the man’s body underwater using sonar, but a dive team was needed to confirm. The Summit County dive team helped with the search.

“Our sincere condolences and thoughts are with the family and local community who are experiencing this tragedy,” Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office said the man was fishing and swimming with friends when he jumped into the water and did not resurface.

The Mullinex family said the sheriff’s office could have done a better job of searching the lake Friday, if it had the proper equipment.

“It is frustrating to realize that Grand County doesn’t have a search and rescue team,” said Laurn Summers, Christopher’s aunt. “They don’t even have a boat.”

The family said they recruited friends with boats Saturday to search the water and when they located what they thought was Mullinex’s body, they alerted the sheriff’s office.

Schroetlin disputes the family’s memory of the rescue efforts. He will review the statistics on water rescues in Grand County to see if there is a need for a dive team and boat.

The family has set up a fund in Christopher’s name to raise money for those items.
