DENVER — A fetal homicide bill cleared a hurdle at the state legislature Wednesday and is now headed to the full Senate for debate and a vote. It passed the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The bill was introduced after the violent attack on Michelle Wilkins in Longmont. A stranger cut out and killed her unborn child. If passed, the bill would make that crime a murder.

At the first hearing Wednesday, opponents called it a way to pass “personhood,” something Colorado voters have rejected several times. Supporters of the bill say it’s necessary.

The bill is expected to pass in the Republican-controlled Senate. It faces an uncertain future in the House, which is controlled by the Democrats.
