JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A man who says he was scammed on Craigslist doesn’t get angry, he gets even. As a result, two suspects are in jail facing charges of felony theft.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said the arrests are thanks to the quick thinking of the victim in the scam.

One-hundred silver bars were listed for sale on Craigslist on Saturday.

“She was selling these for $15 a piece. I saw on the Internet where going bottom rate was $18 to $19 a bar,” Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Mark Techmeyer said.

The ad said the bars were a gift from a grandmother. A woman who said she was pregnant and in need of cash was the seller.

“It puts your guard down a little bit from the emotional sales package that she put together,” Techmeyer said.

Deputies said at least one man took the bait, setting up a meeting Saturday in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

“When they met the man was smart enough to say, you know, give me five bars now, I’ll give you $100 for the five bars. I’ll have them checked out. I want the other 95 but I’ll have them checked out,” Techmeyer said.

A coin dealer told the man, based on weight alone, the deal was too good to be true and the bars were not real silver.

“Then he got really smart, he picked the phone up and called the suspect back and said, ‘Yeah, I’ll take the other 95 bars, lets meet at Wal-Mart,’” Techmeyer said.

The suspects agreed, and Techmeyer said the man’s next call was to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies were on site for the next meeting.

“We’re thrilled with his actions. We were able to make a great arrest due to him. We know we have more victims. So his actions are paramount in our attempts to find more victims,” Techmeyer said.

Deputies arrested Hannah Vergos and Casey Wilder. Police said the two drove to Colorado from Texas just days earlier.

Investigators said a search of the suspects’ hotel room turned up a large amount of cash and dozens more fake silver bars.

“You’ve just got to really, really watch what you are doing. If there is anything that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, stay away from it,” Techmeyer said.

Investigators want to talk to anyone who might have recently bought silver bars on Craigslist. Anyone with information can call the tip line at 303-271-5612.
