DENVER — The importance of being careful when answering online ads is highlighted by what happened to Michelle Wilkins Wednesday afternoon.

The pregnant 26-year-old answered a Craigslist ad for some baby clothes. 24-year-old Dynel Lane is accused of beating, stabbing and cutting Wilkins’ baby out of her womb.

Wilkins was seven months along. The fetus died. Wilkins was in critical condition Thursday night but expected to recover.

One of the many troubling things about this crime is that the victim and suspect connected through Craigslist.

During the last few weeks, police across Colorado have announced the creation of safety zones to carry out online transactions.

Greg Nieto has more information about that and other online buying advice in his video report above.
