DENVER — It just wouldn’t be St. Patrick’s Day in Denver without Keggs and Eggs, now in its tenth year at Lodo’s Bar and Grill.

In case you’re new, here’s the Keggs recipe: One part Irish breakfast, two parts live music (this year provided by The Dirty Heads, 3OH!3 and others) and about 10 parts day drinking while the rest of LoDo is stuck at work. The formula has been so successful, organizer 93.3 FM KTCL has changed little over the past decade.

If there’s any criticism to be made of Keggs, it’s that the bands increasingly seem to play second fiddle to the beer. There are a probably lot of people in Denver who would like to see the The Dirty Heads and 3OH!3 in concert because they enjoy their music. Those people would have been better served listening to the live Keggs broadcast over the radio than actually attending. The place gets so packed that anyone beyond the first couple of sweaty rows has a lot of trouble moving, let alone hearing or seeing the bands.

But all this is by design. Ten years in, Keggs and Eggs remains an old-fashioned St. Patrick’s Day pub riot — casual partiers need not apply.
