LAKEWOOD, Colo. — An elderly man at an assisted living home was killed after being assaulted by another resident early Saturday morning, police said.

The Lakewood Police Department said in a news release that officers responded to a call at the assisted living facility after a report of an assault involving two male residents with Alzheimer’s disease.

Staff members of the facility told police they heard yelling and screaming in a room. When they went to see what was happening, they saw an injured victim and Homer Castor, 87, walking away from him.

The injured 76-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries from blunt force trauma, the statement said.

After police spoke with staff members, Castor was arrested for investigation with second-degree assault.

On Monday morning, Lakewood Police were told the victim had died from his injuries and the allegations were revised to reflect the homicide and crimes against an “at risk adult.”

Castor is being held at the Jefferson County Jail and will make his second court appearance Tuesday.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office will ultimately decide the most appropriate charges for Castor, Police said.
