BOULDER, Colo. — Boulder City Council passed an ordinance on Tuesday night to expand smoke-free public places in the city.

The expansion will now include the following areas:

  • all Parks and Recreation and Open Space & Mountain Parks lands
  • all multi-use paths and 25 feet on each side of the paths
  • 25 feet from all transit stops and building doorways
  • outdoor seating areas at restaurants or taverns
  • the downtown Boulder Business Improvement District
  • the Boulder Civic Area
  • the area surrounding Boulder High School

The ordinance prohibits smoking which includes e-cigarettes or other electronic smoking devices.

It passed unanimously and will go into effect March 19, a City of Boulder representative, Sarah Huntley said.

Boulder police officers will ramp up education and outreach efforts of the ordinance, before regular enforcement begins in early May.

Violators of this ordinance will be fined $1,000 with possible jail time at a maximum of 90 days.

“Expanding smoke-free public places to increase Boulder’s community livability emerged as a priority at the January 2014 Boulder City Council retreat,” said Huntley.
