DENVER — A Colorado company is weaving such a foundation of success it’s now recognized as one of “America’s Most Promising Companies.”

For a second straight year, Denver-based Craftsy makes the coveted Forbes list.

Craftsy is tapping into the $30 billion a year industry of crafting.

It has turned its online interactive instructional videos into $43 million last year. And it’s still stitching together quite a following.

They might be considered “old-fashioned” hobbies: knitting, quilting and sewing.

But Craftsy uses today’s technology to bring them into nearly 7 million homes around the world.

“We create an online educational offering that really brings the magic of a live classroom to life in an online environment,” says Craftsty Chief Operating Officer, Josh Scott.

Craftsy offers hundreds of interactive classes in 16 categories: quilting, knitting, sewing, cake decorating, jewelry-making, wood-working, gardening, crocheting, painting, drawing, photography, embroidery, paper crafts, cooking, spinning and weaving.

Each video offers the viewer an opportunity to ask the instructor questions that the instructor will answer within a certain period of time.

“This year we’ll produce another 450-500 classes,” says Scott.

Each video class is shot in one of six studios in Denver, with the help of 235 workers and experts who walk you through each step.

“We have fantastic instructors from around world we bring into our studios in Denver. And all you do is go to Craftsy.com and choose from the 600 classes on site,” says Scott.

You pay between $20 and $50 for a class that’s yours to view anytime, anywhere, forever. Some classes are free.

Scott says the company fills a niche that also gives people lifelong hobbies and skills.

“This is just something people feel very deeply about. I think that, in some regard, and in reaction to us living in a mass produced society now, a lot of us are reacting to that, by feeling like we want to make things for ourselves and make things for those we love,” he says.

The company is hiring about 50 people this year for everything from engineering, to video production and curriculum design.

Last year, Craftsy nearly doubled its revenues of $23 million from 2013.

And it is number 30 on Forbes list this year. Last year, it was 19.
