GOLDEN, Colo. — A popular Colorado tourist spot is going smoke free. Starting next year, you could be fined $50 for lighting up or vaping in public in Golden.

The ban includes outdoor areas for a part of Golden where supporters of the move say there are so many bars and restaurants that there’s just too much second-hand smoke. But some think the decision is going way too far.

The city council voted in favor of the ban at its meeting Thursday night.

The are affected includes Washington Avenue between 10th and 14th streets, and 12th and 13th streets between Arapahoe and Ford streets.

Other popular public places in Golden fall under the smoking ban as well. Fossil Trace Golf Course, Clear Creek RV Park, city parks, trails and outdoor events are all included.

Business owners are a little concerned about losing long-time customers, but at the same time the city believes there is an opportunity to attract new business since people won’t have to deal with all of the smoke anymore.
