LAFAYETTE, Colo. — An officer caught on video issuing an erroneous ticket to a teenage bicyclist has incorrectly ticketed others for similar behavior, the Lafayette Police Department said Saturday.
According to Lafayette police, in the last 10 years the department has issued a total of four tickets to bicyclists who failed to dismount at a crosswalk — all in the last two weeks, and all by Officer Sean Jenneiahn, the Daily Camera reported.
Sources told FOX31 Denver that all of the tickets were dismissed, but the Lafayette Police Department said they could not verify that claim until Monday.
The incidents came to light this week when Vincent Marten, 16, posted a video to Facebook in which Jenneiahn hands the teen a ticket, explaining that “you have to walk your bike” through a crosswalk.
In reality, the law merely states that “a person riding a bicycle in a crosswalk shall do so in a manner that is safe for pedestrians.”
In the video, Marten can be heard using profanity with the officer, prompting some to wonder if his rude behavior played a role in his being issued a ticket.
“I should’ve acted a little more respectful and calmer toward the officer,” Marten told the Daily Camera. “But it seemed like he wanted to make sure that I knew who he was, that he was a cop and that he was right.”
