DENVER — There is a new memorial in Denver’s City Park, to go with statutes, cannons and plaques honoring other people and events that have helped form Denver.

This one, honors fallen Denver Police Officer Celena Hollis who was killed when Rollin Oliver fired wildly into a crowd at the popular City Park Jazz concert two years ago.

“We want to put everyone who would dare come to the park with no-good intentions, that we are not going to let you run us away,” said Mayor Mike Hancock. “This memorial will serve as a notice that we will still come to the park every Sunday in the summer, because this is a strong city and will not be intimidated.”

Dorothy and Vincent Hollis (Selena’s parents) and her daughter Amyre were on hand for the dedication of a little pocket park, which is located right on the very spot Hollis lost her life.

A bench and signage mark the spot for all to see.

Police Chief Robert White said he hopes all officers will come to the bench for reflection.

“I think everyone should come here and reflect over their lives, Selena’s life and the family she left behind,” said White. “We know the dangers when we take the job, but we also know that serving and protecting our citizens is why we get into police work as well.”
