Typically I’m a naked phone kind of geek.  You know, no case, no screen protector.  Just give me my phone the way god the manufacturer intended it to be.  When I do reach for a case it’s always hard to decide exactly how much protection I want.  Do I go for the slim case with very little protection or the bulky case that can keep my phone wrapped up and secure?  The Convert case from Seidio lets you decide by unwrapping multiple layers… like an onion.

First Layer

The first layer is a 2 snap shell that covers the back of the phone (in this case, an LG Nexus 4.)  Click the two halves together and your phone is now covered in a nice soft touch black rubber.  The Seidio also has a slick silver kickstand built into it.  This takes me back to the HTC EVO, one of the first smartphones to come with a kickstand.  It’s a nice addition but it does add a touch of bulk around the stand.  I like the Convert in this mode.  Slim protection that doesn’t add a ton of weight to the phone but also keeps it protected from scratches, etc.  There is a lip along the front as well so when you lay it face down and the screen won’t touch the surface of the table.

Second Layer

The second layer is a rubberized shell with a plastic claw that holds it all together.  This adds a significant amount of bulk to the phone.  At this point you’ve passed the “cool factor” and you’re going for pure protection.  Your phone will feel almost twice as thick and the softer rubber makes it hard to slide into pockets easily.  That’s OK because it’s protected really well.  The soft rubber provides a decent level of shock absorption so a short drop shouldn’t jack up your phone too bad.  You also still have full access to all of the buttons and the camera via small port holes and a rubber flap on the back.  Slick?  No way.  Protected?  For sure.

Third Layer

The last layer is the belt clip.  This is a plastic claw that wraps around an already bulky case so you can clip this big hunk to your belt.  Again, it’s not slim but it feels very well protected.  This is the 3 layered approach for people who know they’ll drop their phone but are willing to give up look and form factor to keep their phone safe.

Conclusion

The Seidio Convert is a great case for those who just can’t decide how much protection they want.  Use the first layer around the house or at the office when you don’t need a lot of protection.  On the other hand use all 3 layers when you head out skiing or on a hike.  It won’t be slim but you’ll know that your phone can get bumped around a bit without any damage.  The $50+ (depending on model and options) price tag is far from cheap but when you consider you’re getting 3 different solid smartphone cases in 1, it might be worth it.

The Seidio Convert case is available right now for various phones for $49.95 – $74.95 depending on the model.
