JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Fire crews were working on containment and mop-up Sunday of a wildfire that burned dozens of acres in Jefferson County. The brush fire sparked off Interstate 70 near Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Friday afternoon.

The fire was burning along the hogback south of I-70. It was estimated to be approximately 44 acres in size at 30% containment around 10 a.m. Sunday, according to West Metro Fire Rescue.

Containment and mop-up work is expected to be completed on Sunday, West Metro Fire said.

Firefighters have a line around the fire. West Metro Fire said people may see areas of smoke within the perimeter on Saturday, which is normal for this type of fire and it should not cause worry.

Investigators believe the fire was caused when an electrical line fell on the west side of the hogback.

Fire near Morrison closes road, trails into Saturday

Rooney Road in Morrison was partially opened Saturday morning, following Friday closures.

The portion of the road from Colfax Avenue to Thunder Valley Park is open, allowing access to the park from the north. However, on the southern side of the park, Rooney Road is closed at West Alameda Parkway/C-470.

Highways 93 and 26 remain closed, West Metro Fire said. All hiking trails along the hogback are also closed.

Pre-evacuations were issued for several areas, but those were lifted by around 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre was cleared of visitors on Friday afternoon. A concert scheduled for the night was postponed to another date, yet to be determined, because of the extreme winds and nearby wildfire.

Multiple fire departments have been involved in work on the Hogback Fire.

The Front Range was under red flag warnings on Friday because of high winds and low humidity. Winds have been so strong that semitrucks were blown off highways and rocks and dust filled the air.
