AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A teenage boy was shot and killed outside the Aurora mall, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Aurora Police Chief Art Acevedo said in a news conference after the shooting that a group of teenagers had been causing problems in the mall and the off-duty officers stationed there were called to check out a possible altercation at the food court.

While officers were responding to the disturbance call, a male teenager was shot in the parking lot in front of Dillard’s, Acevedo said. An off-duty officer, posted at the mall, conducted life-saving measures before the boy was taken to Children’s Hospital where he died.

Acevedo said police believe there was one shooter, but it is very early in the investigation.

“We don’t have a suspect in custody but I can tell you, I can almost guarantee you, we’re going to catch that individual,” Acevedo said.

“To the individual or individuals responsible for this death, I can guarantee you, you’re going to be caught. So you might as well turn yourself in because you will be caught,” Acevedo said. “You can turn yourself in or you can wait for a SWAT team to show up at your house. Or you do a felony stop and take you down at gunpoint. The choice is yours, turn yourself in.”
