DENVER (KDVR) — Andrew Mutch has been charged with the murder of two transient men.

Denver District Attorney Beth McCann announced Friday that Mutch, 34, is being charged by prosecutors with two counts of first-degree murder.

This all comes after Denver police responded to a report of shots fired at Interstate 70 and North Washington Street on Dec. 19, around 9:36 p.m., according to an arrest warrant. Police visited the Phillips 66 where the call came from, which is located immediately south of the I-70 and North Washington intersection. An employee at the Phillips 66 said a transient man had come into the store, saying he heard gunshots under the overpass.

Police located him and spoke with him about what he heard. Police later identified the transient man as Mutch, mentioning in the arrest warrant he was rambling and incoherent when speaking to officers. The area was searched, but officers did not find anything out of the ordinary.

The arrest warrant detailed that on Dec. 20, around 9:50 a.m., police responded to a report of a deceased male under the westbound offramp of I-70 and North Washington Street. The man, later identified as Michael Thompson, 32, had what looked to be multiple puncture wounds to his face and neck, with apparent blunt force damage to his head. A rock was found near his body.

An autopsy the next day concluded the victim had at least 25 puncture wounds.

Police responded to a call of a second deceased male, identified as Gregory Dupree, 56, on Dec. 21 around 12:17 p.m. on the I-70 eastbound offramp to North Washington Street, the opposite direction of where the first victim’s body was found. Police noted the second victim had multiple puncture wounds and blunt force trauma to his head, according to the arrest warrant.

According to police, it appears that both men may have been attacked while sleeping.

While searching the area for more possible victims, police came across Mutch on the underside of the overpass around 15 feet from where Thompson was found. Officers reported seeing blood on his hands and shoes, along with a large knife in his right coat pocket. No injuries were found on Mutch’s person that could have been the source of the blood according to police.

The arrest warrant mentioned that in a search of Mutch’s camp, police found multiple knives and items that had previously been seen at the site of one of the victims’ camps.

Mutch was arrested on multiple outstanding warrants.
