DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver Broncos have parted ways with head coach Nathaniel Hackett, the team announced Monday.

“On behalf of our ownership and organization, I want to thank Nathaniel Hackett for his dedication as head coach of the Denver Broncos. We sincerely appreciate Nathaniel’s efforts and wish him and his family all the best in the future,” the release from Broncos CEO and Owner Greg Penner said, in part.

The team said the decision was made “out of respect for everyone involved” and it will begin searching for a new head coach immediately.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team named senior assistant coach Jerry Rosburg as the interim head coach.

“Moving forward, we will carefully evaluate every aspect of our football operations and make whatever changes are necessary to restore this franchise’s winning tradition,” Penner said.

Rosburg was brought in after Week 1 to aid Hackett with clock management.

Broncos under Hackett

The Broncos are 4-11 after the 14-51 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Christmas Day when quarterback Russell Wilson threw three interceptions and was sacked six times. Sideline drama has surfaced the past few games and Sunday’s game highlighted the latest with a spat between backup QB Brett Rypien and guard Dalton Risner.

Broncos linebacker Randy Gregory will miss the team’s next game against the Kansas City Chiefs after a post-game altercation with Rams offensive lineman Oday Aboushi. The two players were each suspended one game for exchanging punches.

The organization signed Wilson to a five-year, $245 million extension including a $50 million signing bonus, $77 million in the first eight months and $165 million in guarantees — all before he took his first snap with the team.

This was Hackett’s first head coaching job in the NFL and he was hired to replace former head coach Vic Fangio after the Broncos had a 7-10 season in 2021.

The Broncos have missed the playoffs seven straight seasons after winning Superbowl 50 and have only had one winning season since then.
