AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — An alleged armed suspect was shot and killed by police on an RTD bus Sunday night, Interim Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said.
The suspect was part of an Arapahoe County work-release monitored mental health and substance abuse facility program near Colfax Avenue and Moline Street, Oates said.
Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called out due to the suspect’s rule violations and causing a disturbance around 6 p.m. The county’s policy required deputies to take the suspect into custody and back to jail, Oates said.
The deputy located the suspect at a nearby bus stop where he had threatened several people, according to ACSO.
The suspect was reported to be armed with a large knife and the responding deputy called for police backup. The suspect crossed Colfax into a convenience store and Aurora Police then received 911 calls of a robbery and responded to the scene.
When Aurora officers arrived, they discovered the suspect had left the store and boarded an RTD bus.
Oates said that once the suspect got on an RTD bus, officers followed. A Taser and K-9 were unsuccessfully deployed by an Aurora officer.
Oates said there was a confrontation between the suspect and two officers and they fired shots, striking the suspect.
The suspect was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m., Oates said.
Oates said the suspect was a 35-year-old white man but his identity was not revealed.
Other people were on the bus during the shooting, but Oates said there were no other injuries.
All lanes of Colfax Avenue between Macon Street and Oswego Street were closed during the investigation.
This is the fifth shooting involving police in the last eight days in the Denver metro area, with three of those incidents occurring in Aurora.
